Prix Somerset Maugham en 1976 pour son recueil de nouvelles, «First Love, last Rite», Ian McEwan a également obtenu le prix Whitbread et le prix Fémina Étranger pour «L’Enfant volé». Il a été sélectionné pour le Booker Prize (l’équivalent anglais du Goncourt) à trois reprises, qu’il a décroché pour «Amsterdam» en 1998. En 2006, il a remporté le James Tait Memorial Prize pour «Samedi».
«Expiation» a obtenu le WH Smith Literary Award, le National Book Critics’ Circle Fiction Award, le Los Angeles Times Prize pour une oeuvre de fiction et le Santiago Prize pour un roman européen, et est paru en France aux éditions Gallimard.
Plusieurs de ses ouvrages ont été adaptés au cinéma : Etrange séduction (The Comfort of Strangers) (1990) de Paul Schrader, sur un scénario de Harold Pinter, Cement garden (1992) d’Andrew Birkin, Innocent (The Innocent) (1993) de John Schlesinger, First Love, Last Rites de Jesse Peretz et Délire d'amour (Enduring Love) (2004) de Roger Michell, avec Daniel Craig, Samantha Morton et Rhys Ifans.
Son tout dernier livre «On Chesil Beach» vient de paraître.
